The Third Shift Summary

The Third Shift: Managing Hard Choices in Our Careers, Homes, and Lives as Women by Michele Bolton

By identifying and analyzing the unique challenges women face in the workforce, this work offers cogent strategies for not only coping with the "third shift", a woman's inner dialogue that often second guesses her decisions and actions, but embracing it as a means of empowerment. Practical advice and proven recommendations are offered, based on research and years of professional and personal experience. Based on a three-year study of working women in Silicon Valley, this volume offers a plan for women juggling personal and professional commitments. Michele Bolton identifies three challenges she argues are unique to all women no matter what their workplace choice. Bolton believes that it is not the challenges themselves but the way women manage them that will decide whether their lives are in the end satisfying and harmonious or frustrating and meaningless.

The Third Shift Reviews

"Many women executives today struggle with the work/life balance. Michele Bolton's study and work assures us that those who take the time to listen to their inner selves often have greater effectiveness on both fronts." (Lisa Salamone, executive vice president, The Gap) "This book does a wonderful job of offering practical, readable advice to women struggling to balance home and work. But I have a little secret to share. It is also a great book for men who want (and need!) to learn about 'third-shift' stress, and discover how they can become part of the solution." (David Sadker, professor, American University, and co-author, Failing atFairness: How Our Schools Cheat Girls)
