Each chapter features a specially commissioned map of the district followed by approximately 22 entries on individual buildings and urban spaces ordered in the sequence that you would encounter them on a walk through the area. The 175 illustrated entries cover major landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral, the Bank of England and Guildhall, as well as iconic modern buildings such as Rogers's Lloyd's of London and Foster's 'Gherkin'. A final feature in each chapter presents around 8 extra points of interest, such as unusual pieces of sculpture and hidden gardens. Boxed features cover special topics such as Roman London, the Inns of Court, the Great Fire of London, the river Thames and the newspaper industry.

About Nicholas Kenyon CBE

Sir Nicholas Kenyon is Managing Director of the Barbican Centre in the City of London and, in that role, an Officer of the City of London. Sir Nicholas was previously Controller of BBC Radio 3 and Director of the BBC Proms.
