Containing the Cold War in East Asia Summary

Containing the Cold War in East Asia: British Policies Towards Japan, China and Korea, 1948-54 by Peter Lowe

Based on extensive research in British and American records, Containing the Cold War in East Asia is a thorough consideration of British policies towards Japan, China and Korea between 1948 and 1953. Peter Lowe examines the last stages of the allied occupation of Japan including the negotiation of a peace treaty, the effects of the Chinese Communist victory in 1949 and the origins and impact of the Korean War. Issues discussed in this new study include the United states'rebuilding of the Japanese economy, civil war in China and the problem of when to recognise the new Communist State, and the bitter opposition between the two Korean states - and the resulting instability - which emerged in 1948. The author also comments on Anglo-America relations and the strains caused by the differing attitudes of the two countries towards East Asia.
