Alice's Secret Garden Summary

Alice's Secret Garden by Rebecca Campbell

Stylish and witty tale of city life from the author of THE FAVOURS AND FORTUNES OF KATIE CASTLE

Alice is content to drift along in her job at Enderby's, the fusty auction house, among colleagues who are toffs, tarts or swots. It's an excuse not to engage in real life; having suffered loss before, she finds it altogether easier to dream about what might have been.

Life, however, is about to insist upon engaging with her. Enderby's future might be saved by pulling off an enormous coup: selling a first edition of the exquisitely rare Audubon's Birds of America. Alice is despatched to persuade its current owner, an aristocrat in his rural retreat, to give her the commission. Her mentor and friend Andrew - the one normal person at Enderby's - is highly suspicious. What follows is a mercilessly sharp yet moving lesson in how to spot the genuine article.

Alice's Secret Garden Reviews

ALICE'S SECRET GARDEN:
`A triumph...Inventive, well-written and alive with comic pathos, this is extraordinarily seductive.' Marie-Claire

THE FAVOURS AND FORTUNES OF KATIE CASTLE:
`I love this book! A fantastically sharp, witty novel, full of hilarious observations and wincingly good one-liners.' Sophie Kinsella

`Sharply observed and very amusing first novel' Kirkus Reviews

`How refreshing to meet a heroine who does not have a heart of gold beneath her minxish exterior...a mischievously witty picture of the hysterical, self-absorbed fashion world...To say that Campbell subtly makes the psychological point that self-knowledge is the key to change within a person perhaps over-eggs it. But it adds depth to a very funny, utterly delightful romp.' Daily Telegraph

`The joy of this sarky, stylish read is that waspish, selfish Katie doesn't metamorphose into Mother Theresa and we like her even more for it.' Big Issue
