Lecture Notes on Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine Reviews

Published reviews:makes the best job possible of explaining the seemingly impenetrable jungle of epidemiology - Scope MagazineCommissioned reviews of the 4th edition:This is a wide ranging undergraduate textbook which deals with epidemiological methods, prevention and control of disease and the organisation of health services. The three parts of the book reflect this taxonomy. The only area that it does not seek to cover is the epidemiology of specific diseases, which many believe not to be particularly relevant to undergraduate medical educationWith the exception of critical appraisal of the literature, the alignment of this book with the planned curriculum at UEA is generally good.My suggestion would be to greatly reduce the amount on the structure of the Health Service and increase the amount on critical appraisal of the literature and evaluation of Health Services. The advantage that this book has, is it's use of text and tables and the overall reputation of the Lecture Notes series - Department of Health Policy & Practice, University of East Anglia I would say the coverage of the subject needs updatingI would suggest adding a section on Evidence Based MedicineI know the Lecture Notes series is very popular with students so I would keep the design as it is - Department of Primary Care & Population Sciences, Royal Free Hospital & University College Medical School. I think the primary aim is to provide a text for UK medical students. This is not an unreasonable aspiration but there are a lot of books seeking to fill this niche. The book does not align with the core curriculum at Bristol. We include more health economics, clinical epidemiology, critical appraisal and global health. We also do much less on infectious disease and don't formally cover occupational healthI am not sure what I would specifically change, as lots of books on the market and different medical schools attach different emphasis to different aspects of the epidemiology and public health. - Department of Social Medicine, University of Bristol.
