Since his retirement in 1979 after successive spells as British Ambassador to Warsaw, Bonn and Paris, the author has been prevented by the Foreign Office from publishing these revealing diaries. He has now decided to go ahead, with the bonus that he also adds the full inside story of a later event in which he played a major diplomatic role - the Falklands War.
