Cadell Summary

Cadell: A Scottish Colourist by Tom Hewlett

This is a biography of the Scottish colourist, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883-1937). Using previously unpublished material, and accompanied by numerous colour plates of paintings in public and private collections, the book traces Cadell's career, from his early sketches as a boy to the interiors of the 1920s and 1930s. Cadell, together with Peploe, Hunter and Fergusson, formed an influential group, The Colourists. This book highlights the artist's generous personality, his wit, and his versatile talent, which helped lay the foundations that have influenced Scottish painting throughout the 20th century. The book focuses on Cadell's personal artistic life and looks at the relationship between his painting and the artistic scene in which he lived.
