Shooting Through Life Summary

Shooting Through Life by Willoughby Gus Gullachsen

Shooting Through Life captures some of the highlights of the work of Midlands photographer Willoughby 'Gus' Gullachsen, spanning six decades. From a career dating back to the Second World War, in the course of which he has photographed show business personalities, pop stars, politicians and playwrights, Gus chooses 60 of his favourite images and accompanies each with a personal anecdote recounting the circumstances in which the photograph was taken. The result is a remarkable collection of portraits and places, many of which became household names during the second half of the 20th century.

About Willoughby Gus Gullachsen

Born in Northumberland in 1921, Willoughby 'Gus' Gullachsen's career as a photographer began nearly 70 years ago. After war service in the RAF as a photographer in South Africa, India and Iraq (pictured above in 1945), he moved to the West Midlands where he worked as a freelance photographer for ABC Television (later ATV), TV Times and the BBC. During the next 50 years he photographed 189 productions for the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, many RSC productions at his home town of Stratford-upon-Avon, and was the unit photographer for BBC Drama for 22 years. In addition, 'Gus' has had many exhibitions of his work staged at venues in Birmingham and Stratford, the most recent being his Images Of The Sixties at the Waterhall Gallery of Modern Art in Birmingham in 2005. Many of his photographs are now held among the collections in Birmingham's Central Library.
