In March 1814, Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho returns to England. The war with the United States has not yet ended, but news has come of Napoleon's defeat. However, an unsympathetic Admiralty now dispatches him to Malta, to a familiar sea where both glory and tragedy have already touched his life.
