The Search by Jennifer Langer

The Search is an exploration of the poet's complex identity as the daughter of German Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany for Britain. Born of the history of memory of loss and of refugee roots, she dreams of a lost world snatching at fragments striving to creative a narrative. Yet crucially, the sensibility of otherness is dialogically engaged with contemporary refugees and the oppressed in her dynamic quest for insight and shared traces.

About Jennifer Langer

A long-time writer of poetry, her work has been published in various cultural magazines and she is a member of a poets' collective. Jennifer is editor of four anthologies of exiled literature: The Bend in the Road: Refugees Writing (1997), Crossing the Border: Exiled Women's Writing (2002), The Silver Throat of the Moon: Writing in Exile (2005) and If Salt Has Memory: Contemporary Jewish Exiled Writing (2008) all published by Five Leaves. Long concerned about the demonisation of refugees and asylum seekers, Jennifer believes that these views needed to be countered by the insights articulated by exiled writers themselves about their own experiences. She is founding director of Exiled Writers Ink which brings together established and developing writers from repressive regimes and war-torn situations as well as migrants. Established in 2000, it provides a space for exiled writers to be heard, develops and promotes their creative literary expression and advocates human rights through literature and literary activism. She was co-editor of Exiled Ink magazine and has written numerous articles and presented papers on aspects of the literature of exile. She has also facilitated creative writing workshops in diverse settings, including Further Education colleges. Jennifer previously worked in the field of education in inner London, in schools and further and higher education which included managing refugee education projects and training the trainers. She was also a lead moderator for the London Open College Network. She holds a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in cultural memory and the literature of exile, and an MA in Cultural Memory from the School of Advanced Studies, University of London. She received a Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Research Award in 2011 and is currently a SOAS Research Associate. Jennifer is the daughter of refugees who escaped from Nazi Germany and who met in England. Her parents were both the sole survivors of their respective families.
