London in the Twentieth Century Summary

London in the Twentieth Century: A City And Its People by Jerry White

Since 1900 London has undergone a transformation that will determine its prospects for perhaps the next 500 years. Here Jerry White tells the story of that transformation. He shows how the fabric of London changed over the century, from the end of the Victorian era to wartime devastation, from social utopian reconstruction to present day gentrification. He examines the sweeping changes in the worlds of work, popular culture, transport, politics and government. Above all he shows how in the last50 years immigration has made London one of the most vital and truly global cities in the world.

About Jerry White
