Custom Air Suspension Summary

Custom Air Suspension: How to install air suspension in your road car - on a budget! by Julian Edgar

A step-by-step guide to DIY air suspension for your road car. Manufacturers like Mercedes, Tesla, Audi and Cadillac choose air suspension because they can achieve the highest quality in ride and handling, but until now, there hasn't been a book that shows you how to get the best from aftermarket air suspension for your road car. This book covers both theory and practice - from the technical advantages of air suspension through to detailed coverage of the development, installation and tuning of a custom air suspension system. It looks at wiring and plumbing, covers a brilliant new low cost electronic air suspension controller, and even shows how to source low-cost components from cars originally sold with air suspension. Want to buy an air suspension kit off the shelf? That's covered as well, with the six key questions to ask before buying. Whether you're after the best ride and handling, or simply like being able to raise or lower your car at the turn of a knob, this book will show you how to do it.

If you have a car with air suspension that needs refurbishing or you fancy installing it, then this new book by Julian Edgar, published by Veloce, will guide you through the complete process in an easy-to-follow step-by-step format. The book covers both theory and practice discussing the technological advantages of riding on air through to its development and place in history. Edgar guides you through tuning, plumbing and costs of a system. Off-the-shelf kits are also covered, covering the major points you need to consider such as whether you just want to improve the quality of your ride, have the ability to raise and lower your car on demand or anything else, this book will help. - tkc. Julian Edgar points out in this book, another in Veloce's popular 'SpeedPro' series, air, as opposed to coil springing, is a suspension medium used by current top-end manufacturer such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Rolls-Royce and many others and has many advantages. They include easy maintenance of ride height irrespective of load, rising rate suspension that remains liberal over most if its travel, plus the ability to change both ride height and spring rate with cockpit control. An explanation of how the basic systems work and their variations is followed by a full description of the hardware, both mechanical and electronic, involved, enabling the reader (provided he has the requisite engineering ability) to carry out such work, even by using salvaged air suspension components which are apparently obtainable quite cheaply and often suitable for re-use. The Australian author has written 18 previous books covering a range of automotive DIY topics and is a hands-on modifier who performs all work on his car himself in an extensively equipped home workshop. He ends the book with a full description of how he successfully converted his own Honda Insight to air suspension. While this may not be a task that will be seriously contemplated by the average home mechanic, the author assures the reader that it's entirely possible and for anyone wishing to take the plunge, this book gives a good grounding in theory and practice of converting a car to air suspension. - Speedscene. The author seems to understand what is required; he pitches it well, assuming a degree of understanding on the part of the reader, without assuming that we all have a Masters in pneumatics and fluid dynamics from Oxford. It's a good, informative read, well illustrated and with some simple diagrams and some less-than-simple graphs. If you have a clue already, this title will help you along nicely. - Street Machine.
