Summary

A remarkably gripping and moving account of a life as a Scotland Yard crime scene photographer

The Darkroom Summary

The Darkroom: Case Files of a Scotland Yard Forensic Photographer by A.J. Bennett

It was my job to look and look and look again, until I had captured every part of the scene, until I had told the story of those last moments that the dead could not...

For years, A.J. Bennett was the first person onto a crime scene. Before the detectives and the forensics teams, it was her and the body, the only sound her flashbulb as it lit up scenes of unimaginable horror.

It was her job to record, in exhaustive detail, the images that would allow someone's last moments to be understood. Now she takes us into the shadowy world of the crime scene photographer, from murders to suicides, accidents to assassinations. The photographs she has taken have put killers behind bars, freed the innocent and helped justice to happen. But a life surrounded by so much death takes a heavy toll and Bennett is unflinching in her portrayal of the impact.

In the tradition of Unnatural Causes, When the Dogs Don't Bark and All That Remains, this is a true crime book full of the wisdom that can be found in the darkness.

About A.J. Bennett

A.J. Hewitt is a professionally trained photographer who spent almost a decade as a forensic photographer with New Scotland Yard.

Hewitt studied photography and design at art school. She subsequently graduated (with distinction) with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Insatiably curious and a lifelong learner, she is in the final stage of completing a psychology degree as well. She is a voracious reader, an open water scuba diver and has travelled widely, with her cameras, across four continents. A storyteller at heart, whether through her camera lens or with a pencil and paper, she's a born raconteur who enjoys turning even the most mundane experiences into hilariously entertaining stories.

Having spent more than 10,000 hours photographing crime scenes, and attending court as an expert witness, she brings a unique insider's perspective to her writing.

Her philosophy in life is simple, be kind and laugh often.
