The Brutal Language of Love Summary

The Brutal Language of Love by Alicia Erian

Alicia Erian's deliciously grown-up debut may not be a book for nice girls, but it has a lot to teach us about the unruly nature of desire. A college-bound student plots to lose her virginity to a pizza waiter, a spelling champion spends her afternoons in the bath with the classroom bully and a newlywed finds herself strangely drawn to her husband's father. Bold, achingly funny and never less than heartfelt, these are stories about women who dare to grasp at experience in the knowledge that they may live to regret it. The Brutal Language of Love announces the arrival of a true and highly original voice in American fiction.

The Brutal Language of Love Reviews

'Erian is a very gifted writer indeed... These addictively dark tales are very reminiscent of Milan Kundera's 1968 short story collection, Laughable Loves. Above all, they linger in the mind' -- The List 20020214 'Very readable' -- The Big Issue 20020218 'Extremely interesting... Erian's writing is bold, visceral, fierce and flamboyant' -- Yorkshire Evening Press 20020313 A revelation. Rude, unusual and extremely funny' -- Ms London 20020408 'Funny, provocative and sometimes plain rude, this is a book not to be missed' -- Wiltshire Times 20020301
