Ann Ulanov here uses the psychological theory of D.W. Winnicott to understand and explore religious life. Sensitive to traditional religion's irrelevance for many people today, she argues that depth psychology in general, and Winnicott's work in particular, offer vital new ways in which to understand religious experience. Ulanov expands Winnicott's theory of "transitional space" - space between self and other - to include the space between an individual and the divine, and draws concrete implications from his theories for worship, prayer, doctrine, spirituality, the concepts of gender in theology, and the role of psychology in discovering God.
