The Hill of Dreams by Arthur Machen

A young man's quest for beauty through literature, love, drugs and dreams becomes a mystical, lyrical classic from the father of supernatural horror. Originally published in 1907, it is widely regarded as Machen's finest lyrical work.

The Hill of Dreams Reviews

'Literature is a game played with words - words are the stock elements - but we should not forget that in the case of masters, and Machen is one of them, this game of algebra or chess reflects an emotion.' Jorge Luis Borges

About Arthur Machen

Born and brought up in Monmouthshire, Machen's tales of bohemian 'fin-de-sie cle' London were coloured by the dark and mysterious landscapes of his childhood. A contemporary of Arthur Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde and William Butler Yeats - all of whom admired his work tremendously, Machen's legacy is central to gothic fiction in the twentieth century. His great literary significance was recognized by H. P. Lovecraft who named Machen as one of the four 'modern masters' of supernatural horror.
