A reader’s guide to Ann Cleeves
Ann Cleeves was born in Essex, England, in 1954. The award-winning crime novelist has written gripping series featuring protagonists like Vera Stanhope, Jimmy Perez, and Matthew Venn. Several of her series novels have been adapted to television, with the latest being Shetland. To date, her novels have sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
Raised by a village school teacher, Ann dropped out of university and worked many jobs in adulthood, including a women’s refuge leader and bird observatory cook. In the latter she met her husband, Tim, who was appointed the warden of the Dee Estuary. The two relocated to the remote island with no power, water access, or other companionship. And so, Ann began to write.
