Summary
Simon Mahler died at 17 from a fall from a mare that he and his mother loved dearly. Simon's father, unable to bear the sight of the horse, destroys the one creature that could have helped his distraught wife heal herself. Nora Mahler must now find the strength that she possessed 20 years earlier.

Barbara Esstman was born and brought up in the Mid-West where she graduated from St Louis University. She now lives with her three children on the outskirts of Washington, DC. She has taught in inner-city schools, a county gaol and at various universities and received a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts fellowship.
