Sabias Que...? by Bill VanPatten (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA)
This book uses a content-based approach, stressing vocabulary and functional use of language. The programme is designed as a sequenced set of materials for the first two years of instruction in college Spanish. Certain concepts that have been traditionally taught as first-year grammar are either presented here as vocabulary or have been moved to the second-year text. Units, organized like individual magazines within the text, focus on topics that relate to students' lives and that they will want to read about and discuss: human behaviour, fitness and health, animals and so on. Grammar topics are interspersed throughout the text, presented in manageable bits or steps that provide for continual review and re-entry of topics. Exercises to master structures are found in the students' workbook/lab manual. Tapes, software and instructor's manuals are also available.
