Winter Climbs in the Lake District by Bob Bennett
The two previous editions of this guide showed the potential of the region for winter climbing. With improvements in ice tools the last decade has seen an explosion in mixed buttress routes, confirming the area as a major winter climbing venue. All the climbs have been done under true winter conditions, and speculative or incomplete ascents have been omitted. Descriptions are from a consensus of opinion where available. Pitch lengths are given where necessary, but on some of the easier sections only overall lengths are indicated. A star system of grading is included. For ease of use the guide has been divided into four sections: north, south, east and west. A few routes local to the area but not actually in the Lake District have been included as they are not covered by any other guide. Access description, descents, grid references, altitude and aspect of crags and also, where relevant, a note on conditions have been included. Where it is known, the date of the first ascent is given.
