Social Welfare Policy and Advocacy Summary

Social Welfare Policy and Advocacy: Advancing Social Justice through 8 Policy Sectors by Bruce S. Jansson

This is the first textbook that embeds policy practice and policy advocacy in multiple policy sectors (health, child welfare, mental health, education, safety net, and gerontology). It transforms policy from the encyclopedic qualities of some competing policy-sector texts by providing tools for social worker students to engage in advocacy at multiple levels.

Social Welfare Policy and Advocacy Reviews

Should a BSW or MSW program have only one course in social policy, the book will provide a good and solid basis at understanding basic social policy and advocacy strategies. The social work student will emerge from the course with a plethora of basic knowledge of social welfare policy issues and fundamental advocacy tools.

-- Joseph Wronka, Springfield College

Jansson's use of six cross-cutting problems gives each student a systematic way of considering their own role in engaging in policy advocacy at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.

-- Joyce Lee Taylor, Springfield College
This is an outstanding textbook that provides essential information for practice of policy intervention. -- Jitendra Kapoor, Alabama A&M University

About Bruce S. Jansson

Bruce S. Jansson (MA, University of Chicago and Harvard University; PhD, University of Chicago) is the Driscoll/Clevenger professor of social policy in the School of Social Work at the University of Southern California (USC). He joined the USC faculty in 1973 after working in Michigan as a community organizer and planner for tenant rights. He also has served as the Moses distinguished research professor at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. His scholarly interests focus on advancing case advocacy and policy advocacy in social work, as well as examining the history and practice of social welfare policy. He invented the term "policy practice" in the 1984 release of The Theory and Practice of Social Policy, which was succeeded by other titles, including Becoming an Effective Policy Advocate (1999, 2003, 2008, 2011, and 2014). Policy practice has since emerged as a recognized intervention, with the Council on Social Work Education now requiring social work schools to teach policy practice.
