Each battle is accompanied by a battle map from the era. At the end of her description of the Battle of Culloden, Wedgwood movingly alludes to the impending threat of a German invasion and the airmen caught up in the Battle of Britain who left the quivering air signed with their honour.

Dame Cicely Veronica Wedgwood (1910 - 1997) was an English historian who published under the name CV Wedgwood. Specializing in the history of 17th-C England and Continental Europe, her biographies and narrative histories provided a clear, entertaining middle ground between popular and scholarly works.
