Road Horse by Caroline Binch

Sammy's dad races trotting horses - called Road Horses by Gypsies and Travellers - and Sammy's dream is to have a horse of his own to train and race. So he can't believe his luck when Dad takes the whole family and his best friend Billy to famous Appleby Fair, the biggest horse sale of all. But Sammy and Billy make enemies at the Fair, and just when they think they've found the perfect horse, things get really rough. Will Sammy ever get his Road Horse?

Road Horse Reviews

A lively, entertaining read. Westmorland Gazette This book works well, not just as a good story, but also because it reflects the culture of a small ethnic community in this country. It can act as a source of discussion and is a welcome addition to the small number of books dealing with travelling families. The book is aimed at KS2, but will work with able younger readers as well as those further up the school. School Librarian The story moves at a leisurely pace. There's little suspense or conflict but it is satisfying and also, informative. It's a real 'horsey' book in the best sense of the word, with the author's obvious love and knowledge of horses permeating the writing. it also provides an insight into the ways of Travellers, theor everyday lives and interests - and the prejudices they experience. Realistic and beautifully executed pencil drawings capturing individual expressions and postures of both characters adn horses add a great deal to the narrative. Books for Keeps 'Road Horse' carries some strong messages about prejudice and difference. It doesn't preach. It just makes you think. An exciting story...and something more. Wessex Muse magazine
