This popular book guides clinicians and students in assessing and treating common childhood problems. Written in a highly accessible style, the volume presents an overview of healthy development, examines risk and protective factors for psychopathology, and spells out a behaviorally oriented model of assessment and treatment planning for children aged 2-12. Each problem-focused chapter reviews the literature on the topic at hand and provides step-by-step guidelines for practice, illustrated with helpful case examples. Featuring appendices that describe widely used assessment instruments, the book also contains more than 20 reproducible measures, clinical forms, and parent handouts, ready to photocopy and use.

Assessment and Treatment of Childhood Problems, Second Edition Reviews

"The second edition of Assessment and Treatment of Childhood Problems has made one of the best books in the area even better. What makes this book stand out is its unique blend of thorough scholarship, clinical insight, and practical application tips. I treasured the first edition and am delighted that it has been updated. A 'must' for the library of any clinician who works with children."--C. Eugene Walker, PhD, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center

"This is the most comprehensive, practical, evidence-based text currently available on the problems of children. Schroeder and Gordon's systematic biopsychosocial approach is invaluable for teaching students the multiple contributors to health and dysfunction in childhood--from temperament and biology to parenting, peers, schooling, and other environmental factors. The book also offers detailed descriptions of possible treatment options, including pharmacology, behavior therapy, and parent education. It explains how to conduct a balanced assessment of child and family strengths and vulnerabilities, leading to a comprehensive treatment plan that is both supportive and effective. Also invaluable are the tables that provide practical advice to give parents, based on scientific and clinical evidence. In short, this is the definitive text on the topic."--Susan H. McDaniel, PhD, Department of Psychiatry and Wynne Center for Family Research, University of Rochester

"Extensively revised and expanded, this comprehensive text provides a masterful synthesis of the current research underlying evidence-based assessment and treatment for children. The book offers amazingly detailed, practical, highly readable 'how-tos' for managing virtually every psychological or behavioral problem likely to be encountered in clinical child or pediatric practice."--Sheila Eyberg, PhD, ABPP, Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, University of Florida
