Sustainability for Healthcare Management Summary

Sustainability for Healthcare Management: A Leadership Imperative by Carrie R. Rich (Vision Translation, Inova Health System, USA)

Sustainability is not unique to health, but is a unique vehicle for promoting healthy values. This book challenges healthcare leaders to think through the implications of our decisions from fiscal, societal and environmental perspectives. It links health values with sustainability drivers in order to enlighten leadership about the value of sustainability as we move toward a new paradigm of health. The authors explore leadership priorities and link them to sustainability, through an imaginary health leader, Fred, the Chief Executive Offi cer (CEO) of Memorial Hospital, a community hospital based in the United States. Each chapter frames a leadership priority and accompanying sustainability driver through a storyline that involves the main character, Fred, and his colleagues.

Practical applications featuring evidence-based sustainability accomplishments and the coordinating refl ections of renowned healthcare leaders are woven throughout the book. Every chapter includes leadership tools, illustrations and tables with tips and data to make an evidence-based case in support of health sustainability. Practical applications enhance each chapter by providing real examples of sustainability accomplishments and reflections from healthcare leaders bring such examples to life. The book includes a healthcare sustainability syllabus as well as suggested reading and teaching resources.

By bringing together the key concepts of environmentally sustainable healthcare operations, this book is a unique resource to researchers, students and professionals working in health and healthcare management. Readers will also gain an appreciation for translating leadership priorities into sustainability tactics with beneficial operational outcomes.

Sustainability for Healthcare Management Reviews

@quote:`This book addresses the responsibilities and opportunities for health services administrators to move institutions beyond 'going green.' Healthcare consumers will increasingly look to healthcare organizations to lead the sustainability mandate. The sustainability transformation begins with this conceptual and practical guide.' - Kenneth White, Department of Health Administration, Virginia Commonwealth University, USA

`For hospitals, sustainability of the environment is a priority on several fronts, including the clear connections with population and individual health, as well as the significant physical and energy resources required by hospitals to provide care 24/7. This book frames the leadership challenges and imperatives in a compelling way, calling on all health care leaders - executives, clinicians and trustees - to make the environment and sustainability a top priority in an expanded vision of health.' - Richard J. Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association (AHA), USA

`This book is essential reading for all future health care leaders. It is time for health care managers and policy decision-makers to pay greater attention to the larger environment. We must educate our students, both national and international, that health systems whether large or small, exist in communities. Sometimes these environments appear robust but sometimes they need greater attention and protection. We must make health care sustainability an integral part of our curricula for leaders and managers.' - Peggy Leatt, Professor and Chair, Department of Health Policy and Management, University of North Carolina, USA

`This groundbreaking book makes a powerful case that sustainability in healthcare is a strategic priority for the 21st century. The authors demonstrate in friendly and accessible language the critical role of leadership in driving sustainability throughout their organizations. Sustainable healthcare is the best path to lower costs, improved environmental performance, better patient and worker safety and healthier communities.' - Gary Cohen, President, Health Care Without Harm, USA
