Leather and Bead Jewellery to Make Reviews

The designer shows how you can quickly make cool designs out of beads and leather cords. To do this, she uses mostly simple stringing methods for the beads and common knotting techniques for the leather
cords. Additionally, projects using styles such as macrame, beading and wirework are presented. Challenging pieces, where different techniques are combined, will appeal to experienced beaders.

This book is split into different sections. The first of which is a comprehensive list of materials, and tells you which is the best material for a particular look. Included is a short overview of the different findings and tools you can use with a helpful photo of them all. String, knotting, beading/weaving and macrame are the basic techniques used in this book. Shown with great step by step photographs, these techniques are easy to follow. Over half the book is made up of 30 projects for bracelets, necklaces and earrings, whcih are all quite easy and some nice ideas. They are all quite bohemian, ethnic, naive looking pieces. I cannot fault the book on anything, great instructions, super photgraphy etc..

Leather might not seem the most obvious material for making jewelry, but it is currently enjoying popularity. Looking at this book is it easy to see why and how it can be made into impressive pieces to match anything in your wardrobe.

Leather thonging, flat and round cords plus offcuts combine with beads and findings to great effect in this book. Just looking at the items on the cover made me instantly want to get started and if you already make even simple strung jewerly you will have almost everything you need. After a brief look at what you need and the types of leather materials used in the book there is a section on the basic techniques. Again, these are simple including braiding, knotting, some basic macrame, attaching findings, etc with more complex techniques found later on in the relevant projects. This book has some excellent staged photographs so it is easy even for beginners to achieve good results with a bit of practice. The projects themselves are arranged in sections of varying complexity from basics through to weaving, macrame and mixed methods. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings and pendants are all featured, including the latest trends for wrapped bracelets, cuffs and simple knots in place of clasps. Each project has a photograph of the finished piece along with staged photographic instructions plus a handy list of materials with their photos shown too. This feature is great for anybody new to jewelry making who is not sure what something would look like, and for choosing the right items for the look shown. There is also a short section on designing your own work and choosing materials, getting even a beginner to think about whom the piece is for, where it will be worn, what with, etc. This is a great book on a new style of jewelry that is sure to have anybody who uses it achieving some impressive results.

About Cat Horn

Cat Horn has been making jewellery since she was a child. A long family vacation to the American Southwest when she was ten years old introduced her to the world of beadweaving on a loom. The intricate designs made with colourful beads woven into jewellery and clothing drove her to learn how to make them herself. Later, she trained as a fashion designer and worked in the New York fashion industry, right in the heart of Manhattan. After five years, she left New York and the big fashion industry behind to start her own business in the incredibly creative and artistic city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here, she learned the ropes of production-style jewellery making by working part time for local jewellery designers, while building her own Etsy store.
