Pathological sleepiness is a fundamental symptom of sleep disorders. Daytime sleepiness is a common problem which can have a significant negative impact on the health and well being of these individuals. This issue reviews the investigation of sleepiness, as well as some of the more common causes: narcolepsy, chronic hypersomnia, sleep deprivation, circadian rhythm disorders, neuromuscular disorders, and sleep-disordered breathing.
