Skirts & Dresses for First Time Sewers Summary

Skirts & Dresses for First Time Sewers by Christine Haynes

One of the main reasons new sewers buy a machine is to start making their own clothes. However, beginners sewing books tend to include only a few basic projects, often with very little focus on making clothes.

With easy-to-follow instructions, clear illustrations, and simple, downloadable sewing patterns, Skirts & Dresses for First Time Sewers fulfils a need for a practical resource of clothing projects aimed at novice sewers who want to start making their own clothes. Covering a wide range of popular classics from A-line and pencil skirts to wrap and shift dresses, each chapter begins with fashionable visual inspiration. Basic information details the key characteristics of each style, together with the most suitable fabrics to use, and creative styling tips. These overviews are followed by detailed step-by-step tutorials that show readers exactly how to sew their own version of each dress or skirt, using easy-to follow text and simple illustrations to guide them through every part of the process. Patterns for every sewing project are easily accessible via handy QR codes, while suggestions are also offered for making simple adaptations to each style in order to create different looks. A useful chapter on embellishments concludes the book, showing how to add a variety of basic trims to finished garments, including lace edging, collars, and applique.

Skirts & Dresses for First Time Sewers Reviews

March 2015

Want to sew but don't know how? Here's the book for you. Make up-to-date and timeless classic clothes to wear. Be unique, choose or dye your own fabric that no-one else is wearing. Sewing your own clothes makes your look individual and stylish. It gives you the freedom for the perfect fit. Fashionable, easy to sew clothes are included in this book. There are easy to follow tutorials, tips and advice on creating and adapting the full size downloadable pdf patterns. Note the patterns are not included in the book but are available to download and print. You will learn how to sew darts, gather, pleat, insert a zip, finish seams and make your own bias tape. The projects include skirts and dresses in adaptable styles. I like most of them, the maxi skirt is a bit old fashioned and the illustrations are a bit too doll-like and make it look like a kid's book. I like the alternatives and clear instructions. I would have preferred a pattern sheet but the downloads work fine - I tried them. If you are typing in the URL, it is case sensitive, so ensure you type it correctly. When the pattern appears, scroll down, you will see a download icon, click and export. An excellent introduction to sewing your own exciting wardrobe.

Want to make your own clothes but think it looks too hard? Here are fifteen projects for simple pieces that will fill your wardrobe and teach you all the basics of dressmaking. As it says on the cover inside this book you can find patterns, tutorials, tips and advice. Find out what you need to buy to stock a basic sewing box, get to grips with your sewing machine and practise basic skills such as darts, zips, pleats and gathers. The patterns themselves are downloadable; just print them out in sections and glue them together, then cut out. This saves buying a lot of patterns and the instructions in here are more accessible to a total tyro. There are pages of layouts too, with advice about sizes. The garments themselves are either fairly loose or semi-fitted, with sizes ranging from 10-18. All are pretty classic, and each garment comes with advice on which figure type it suits best, a couple of alternative ways of styling it and photos as well as illustrated instructions. Choose from A line skirt, smocked sundress, baby doll dress, circle skirt, pleated skirt etc and upcycle existing garments with the men's shirt skirt and T-shirt dress. Many of the garments might appeal more to the younger stitcher, or at least the young at heart but there is nothing too quirky in here, nor nothing that will date too badly.
