The National Gallery Complete Illustrated Catalogue on CD-ROM by Christopher Baker
The National Gallery in London houses one of the world's finest and most comprehensive collection of European paintings from the 13th century to the early 20th century. This electronic edition of the National Gallery's catalogue, now available separately from the book in a substantially revised and updated version, provides concise information on every work owned by the Gallery, all illustrated, the majority in colour. Each entry includes the title of the picture, its date, attribution, inventory number, support, medium and dimensions. Inscriptions are transcribed and translated. The text describes the subject matter of every work, its origin, function and provenance. Each artist is given a brief biography. Specially devised and improved index and search facilities allow users access to subjects (for example, children, angels, Mary Magdalene) and pictures type (for example, portrait, landscape) as well as to pursue their interest in such matters as style, iconography, subject matter, technique and genre, and to look up their favourite paintings. Paintings are reproduced in three sizes: a thumbnail; mid-size allowing a large view of the whole work; and the largest, too large to be displayed as a whole, enabling users to scroll over the complete image in considerable magnification. (The largest of the large images would take up an area of about 320 square inches on screen). Two new features include a lightbox facility, permitting several images to be viewed at once and a bookmark feature which enables users to compile their own selection of pages. Scholarship and new technology combine to make this a tool for art historians, teachers, picture researchers and anyone with an interest in European painting.
