This work is an account of the structure of the government of the Ottoman Empire from its foundation to the mid-17th century. Going beyond a simple narrative of Ottoman achievements, Colin Imber uses original sources and research, as well as the rapidly expanding body of modern research on the subject, to show how this complex state worked in practice.
