The Poems 2 Volume Hardback Set Summary

The Poems 2 Volume Hardback Set by D. H. Lawrence

Lawrence began composing poems in 1905 and published eleven collections of his poetry between 1913 and 1932. This critical edition includes these collections as well as unpublished poetry preserved in his notebooks, freshly transcribed and annotated. A 1916 sequence of war poems, 'All of Us', is published for the first time. Poems and all versions of Lawrence's own prefaces to his collections of verse are in the first volume, while the second volume consists of explanatory notes, textual apparatus and a comprehensive study of the composition, publication and reception of the poetry. These two volumes complete the Cambridge Edition of the Works of D. H. Lawrence, making his complete works now available in authoritative scholarly editions.

The Poems 2 Volume Hardback Set Reviews

'It is so manifestly an excellent thing to have Lawrence's many poems brought together, edited by so punctilious and expert a scholar - and to have them presented in handsome volumes that do such credit to their publisher.' The Times Literary Supplement
'Christopher Pollnitz has done an absolutely remarkable job with these volumes and his essay dealing with the composition, publication and reception of the poems is a model of clarity and insight: he not only brings the bibliographical details of the poems to light but engages with the poetry in such an infectious manner that one wants to go back to the individual poems time and time again.' Ian Brinton, Tears in the Fence
'Impeccable volumes.' Barry Hill, The Australian
'A triumph. Readers of Lawrence who are curious, as we should be, about how these poems came into being - their provenance and history, how each one is related to Lawrence's circumstances at the moment of his writing and where it stands in the complex development of his thought - have every reason to be grateful, both to Christopher Pollnitz, the editor, and to the Press.' David Malouf, Sydney Review of Books
'These volumes are worth celebrating as they stand Christopher Pollnitz's achievement is immense.' Literary Review
'These two volumes [are] a wonder of persistent editorial effort and a brave struggle with textual complexity.' Dieter Mehl, Editionen in der Kritik
