When a business man is shot dead in his car at his place of work, Superintendent Harriet Love and her CID team fire into action. George Blackwell appears to have had numerous enemies many of whom are not sorry that he is dead, and this makes the investigation difficult. Routine enquiries begin with all the people who hated Blackwell having to be tracked down. His house is burgled, and the man suspected of doing this is then murdered in the same manner as Blackwell, but no connection between the two victims can be found. Harriet realises that this investigation is going to be one of their most difficult cases and with DCI Charlie Marlow and the rest of the team they set about hunting for a killer.
