About David G. Hicks, M.D.

David Hicks earned his Ph.D at the University of Oxford after completing nineteen months of field research in East Timor, Southeast Asia. In addition to his work in East Timor, Dr. Hicks conducted field research on the island of Flores in Indonesia. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including research awards from the National Science Foundation, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, and the American Philosophical Society. In addition to Ritual and Belief: Readings in the Anthropology of Religion, he is also the author of Tetum Ghosts & Kin (1976), Structural Analysis in Anthropology: Case Studies from Indonesia & Brazil (1978), A Maternal Religion: The Role of Women in Tetum Myth & Ritual (1984), Kinship and Religion in eastern Indonesia (1990), and is co-author of Cultural Anthropology (1994; 1996) with Margaret A. Gwynne. Dr. Hicks is currently Professor of Anthropology at the State University of New York at Stonybrook.
