Just as the experience of the Vietnam War shaped an intellectual generation in the USA, French involvement in Algeria was a central topic of political debate amongst intellectuals in France a decade earlier. This comparative study traces the similarities and differences in these two cases of intellectual anti-war engagement - from Camus and Sartre's earliest protests to the comments of 13 prominent American intellectuals in the New York Review of Books after the fall of Saigon.
