Paul's dreams of becoming a concert pianist are spurred on when he acts as page-turner at a recital given by the brilliant Richard Kennington. On holiday in Rome their earlier attraction develops into an intense affair, which ends abruptly. Embittered, Paul returns to his studies at music school.
