Woodholme Summary

Woodholme: A Black Man's Story of Growing Up Alone by DeWayne Wickham

This autobiography tells the story of DeWayne Wickham, who at the age of eight witnessed his father murder his mother and then kill himself. It relates how the author grew up haunted by this event, and how he eventually overcame the reality of the loss of his parents. DeWayne's troubled schooldays are related, as are his experiences as a caddie at an all-white Jewish country club in southern Baltimore. The encounters he had there helped him to accept responsibility as an unmarried 17-year old father, and finally to come to terms with the death of his parents. This work is an evocative portrait of growing up black in the 1960s, and an exploration of paternalism and paternity.

Woodholme Reviews

DeWayne Wickham joins the ranks of fine African-American journalists with this remarkable memoir. It is as though Wickham and his baby boomer colleagues--Jill Nelson, Nathan McCall, and Lorene Cary--have set about defining the decades of their coming of age through autobiography.--'Boston Sunday Globe' Woodholme is rich with details about what life was like for a young black boy growing up, practically on his own, in Baltimore in the 1950s and early '60s...It's unforgettable for the lessons sprinkled throughout its pages.--'Detroit Free Press' An outstanding example of why this country must refocus its priorities on education, job creation and training, anti-violence measures, and nurturing our children.--Marian Wright Edelman, President, The Children's Defense Fund 'Woodholme' dispels the notion that many African-Americans have lost touch with cultural traditions and community. Wickham, a master of descriptive language, establishes characters and storytelling rhythm with the skill of a seasoned novelist.--'Washington City Paper' An evocative memoir of a lonely, confused boy growing up on Baltimore's poorest streets, who finds an odd kind of partial salvation working at Woodholme.--'Baltimore Jewish Times' [A] moving memoir.--'USA Today'
