Sharing the Dream Summary

Sharing the Dream: White Males in Multicultural America by Dominic J. Pulera

White males, 100 million strong, constitute approximately 35 per cent of the US population. They are central to discussions of race, ethnicity and gender in the US, due to their number and the enormous influence they wield. In this highly readable book, Dominic Pulera gives the broadest and most balanced treatment yet of the white male American experience. He contends that virtually all white males are sharing the American dream with women and people of colour, in response to the country's changing demographics and the multicultural mindset now informing policies and attitudes. Some are sharing the dream voluntarily, others involuntarily. The author explores the heterogeneity of white male America, taking account of age, ethnicity, ideology, social class, regional background, occupation, and sexual preference. This timely work draws on a broad range of sources, including extensive field research and hundreds of interviews. It includes original historical treatments, discussion of contemporary dynamics, and comparative material that takes account of the experiences of people in other countries. Pulera places white males in the context of America's ongoing transition from being a predominantly white country to one where people of different ethnic backgrounds are increasingly numerous and visible.
