Encyclopaedia of Architecture by Doreen Yarwood
In over 1200 articles, the author sets out a mass of detailed information on the history of architecture. There is some emphasis on British architectural history, but the story cannot be told without reference to the continental European and American base from which British architecture has initially sprung. Thus, for example, there are articles on Roman, Byzantine, Renaissance, Baroque and modern arhitecture which set developments in Britain in their international context. The contents include architects, designers, architectural styles, detail and ornament, building types (ecclesiastical, domestic, civic, educational, entertainment etc), structural terms and building materials. There is a separate index to over 4000 subjects.
