About Dr. Peter A. Mackereth

Peter is the Clinical Lead for Complementary Therapies (CTs) at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Manchester and University Reader in Integrated Health at the University of Derby (Buxton Campus). He is a registered nurse, and has worked in intensive care, neurology and oncology. Peter has an MA in Medical Ethics and has completed a PhD project examining reflexology vs. relaxation training for people with MS. In 2003 the Complementary Therapy team at the Christie received the prestigious Prince of Wales's Good Practice Award. In 2004 the team won the Dept of Health's Manchester and Regional Innovations Awards in Long-term Care. In 2005 Peter was given the National Public Servant Award hosted by the Guardian Newspaper. The team is currently working on a number of research and audit projects exploring outcomes for acupuncture, hypnotherapy, aromatherapy, creative imagery/relaxation and reflexology. Peter has published widely and speaks regularly at conferences and study days. Ann Carter has a background in education and health promotion and has worked as a therapist and teacher of hands on therapies since 1989. She joined the team at the Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Centre as an Aromatherapist on a sessional basis in 1994, and have since been involved in many aspects of palliative care. Since 2000 she has worked as the part time Complementary Therapy Co-ordinator at St. Ann's Hospice (66 beds) which includes two hospice sites 20 miles apart, and the Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Centre now part of the Hospice. She teaches post graduate courses for therapists and health care professionals and works as an aromatherapy examiner for the Sandra Day School of Health Studies in Rochdale. She has also been responsible for devising and participating in the new postgraduate qualification, Complementary Therapies in Cancer Care for the same teaching establishment
