Not Sunday, Not School Bible Heroes! Summary

Not Sunday, Not School Bible Heroes!: A once-a-month children's programme for small churches by Eleanor Zuercher

Ideal for church-based children's leaders working with 3-11s Not Sunday, Not School Bible Heroes! contains eleven off-the-peg themed activity programmes and a five-session holiday club based around the lives of Old and New Testament Bible heroes, both well-known and less familiar. The material builds on the success of Not Sunday, Not School! and Through the Year with Jesus! by offering a further year's worth of programme ideas to facilitate children's work in small churches and rural communities. Each two-hour programme offers material for a range of practical activities including storytelling, games, art and craft, drama, discussions, music, cookery and Bible teaching, plus ideas for an act of worship following a workshop session. These activities are designed to explore the stories of God working through people throughout history, including considering how we ourselves might fit in. The programmes are introduced with helpful hints on how to run an effective children's programme outside of Sunday worship, including information on planning and preparation, using the Bible, creative and reflective storytelling and a concluding act of worship.

Not Sunday, Not School Bible Heroes! Reviews

Another lovely book from Eleanor that contains a series of ready to go sessions - this time on Bible heroes such as Abraham, Gideon and Rahab - as well as a 5-day holiday club programme that focusses on New Testament heroes and us. Each session has an introduction for leaders and then a good way to share the Bible material and plenty of choice of craft, games and other activities. I love the (optional) guided visualisations and meditations. Lots of ideas that will work well with mixed-ages and in a small group - ideal for rural and small churches. About Eleanor Zuercher

Eleanor Zuercher is by profession a chartered secretary, but recently gave up her job as company secretary with a firm of city solicitors in order to train as a teacher - which she suspects may be her true vocation! Eleanor lives and works in a rural parish in the West Buckingham Benefice (a group of six rural parishes) where, for the past four years she has been running workshops for children aged 3-12. Alongside this work she oversees all the children's work for her parish as well as being involved in planning and taking services, taking school assemblies and occasional RE lessons, acting as a liaison person between the church and the local infants school and developing other links with the local community. Eleanor has also undertaken a number of training courses, most recently Leading Children, a correspondence course run by St John's Extension Studies, which she passed with commendation. The rural affairs magazine, Country Way, published a feature on her work in a recent edition.
