One Hundred Stories: Highlights from the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Summary

One Hundred Stories: Highlights from the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts by Elizabeth Johns

One Hundred Stories celebrates one hundred paintings, sculptures, works on paper and decorative arts in the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (WCMFA) in Hagerstown, Maryland. Founded in 1931 with a collection donated by Mr and Mrs William Henry Singer, Junior, the collection has grown significantly, and now includes over 6,000 objects, ranging from Old Masters to 20th-century art, the emphasis being on American art from the last two centuries. This highly illustrated book reveals the Museum's strengths and variety. Short entries by scholars on each object discuss the work's place in the career of the artist; and put it in context. This volume includes major examples by leading American 18th, 19th and 20th-century artists, Old Master and major 19th-century European artists, and decorative arts including silver, glass, and earthenware. An essay by Joseph Ruzicka about the history of the Museum is followed by an essay by Alan Fern on the history of museums in the United States. The main presentation of artworks and entries are arranged by category.
