Mosaics for the Home and Garden Reviews

Written by Emma Biggs and Tessa Hunkin, partners in the Mosaic Workshop, this is a book full of hands-on experience. Freely admitting in some cases to results by trial and error, it is nevertheless a professional overview of the ancient art of mosaic. Originating in Roman times it has found a place in most centuries and is once again experiencing a renaissance today, especially outside in the garden. Mosaics, be they colourful glass, tesserae or more organic materials such as pebbles and shells, have a year round visual impact outside. During the growing season they can enhance a planting scheme and in winter, when all is bare, add an attractive structural element. Indoors, they can enliven conservatories, dining rooms and kitchens, injecting an artistic and harmonising aspect into all situations. Aimed more at the serious craftsperson than the amateur dabbler, this book gives an excellent overview of all types of mosaic, their history and the techniques used today. Accompanied by illustrations of mosaics from all periods of time, it is a colourful reference for all styles of art - be it Roman or modern. From tables to sculpture, wall hangings to stepping stones, there are a large number of projects to inspire and adapt to your own requirements. The technical section at the end is particularly useful and informative and covers the subject in more depth than most other publications on the subject. More advanced than its compatriot publications, this is a work for those seeking to produce a professional looking piece of art for their home or garden. Contemporary designs intermingle with the more traditional making this an appealing work for all.
