The Flying Squirrel and Other Stories from the Woodlands by Frances Ball
One of a series of stories about animals in different habitats, this book is on the flying squirrel. Though presented as fiction, the situations and events are based on the behaviour of real animals and have been carefully checked for biological accuracy. The 18 stories follow the woodland habitat through the seasons, from spring to winter. Mammals, birds, reptiles and insects are all included and there are stories that take place at night as well as during the day. The animals are not given human thoughts and emotions - but it is intended that it is impossible not to identify with the characters the authors have created. The stories are full of information about animal behaviour and the woodland environment but they are primarily intended to be enjoyable and entertaining. Cliff Wright's first picture book was runner-up for the Mother Goose award in 1990 and since then he has both written and illustrated a number of successful titles for children. His recent work includes illustrations of the Androx puppy featured in a series of books as well as on TV and in promotional material.
