Masculinities Matter! Summary

Masculinities Matter!: Men, Gender and Development by Frances Cleaver

Men appear to be missing from much gender and development policy. However, emerging critiques suggest the need to pay more attention to understanding men and masculinities, and to analysing the social relationships between men and women. This book considers the case for a focus on men in gender and development, including arguments based on equality and social justice, the specific gendered vulnerabilities of men, the emergence of a crisis of masculinity and the need to include men in development as partners for strategic change. Incorporating men into gender and development requires us to reconsider some of the theories and concepts which underlie policies. This book addresses a variety of such concepts and debates including the links between modernization, development and gender, whether feminist analytical frameworks are appropriate for incorporating men and their concerns, how useful the concept of hegemonic masculinity is in understanding different cultural conceptions of manliness, and the need to find ways of combining concern with micro level and private social relations with an analysis of macro level trends and structures. Chapters in this book draw on experience from a variety of geographical areas and different development projects and processes to analyse men and masculinities and to draw out implications for policy and practice. Subjects covered include working with children and in schools, impacting upon sexual health and intimate relations, and working with men in women's groups. Other chapters look at gender relations and masculinities in situations of violence and conflict, the role of the state and ideologies of nationalism in shaping masculinities, and the interlinking of gender relations with race and class. Overall they illustrate the complexity of economic and social relationships shaped by local, national and international processes, and the importance of incorporating an understanding of men and masculinities into gender and development.

Masculinities Matter! Reviews

'This much needed book poses serious and timely questions about the scope and purpose of gender and development theory and practice. Its wide range of case studies from different geographical and social contexts illustrates the complexity and urgency of issues around men, gender and development, and demonstrates the strength of an analysis which is both contextually embedded and linked in with global structures and issues.' Judy El-Bushra, former research director of ACORD 'Composed of a number of essays by academicians and policy workers and designed to stimulate dialogue between these two groups, the book provides for an array of approaches ranging from the densely theoretical to the pragmatic.' Steven A. Zyck, Dartmouth College 'A thorough and thoughtful review of the state of affairs in studies of men and masculinities in development and a clear and systematic text every lecturer in gender and development will happily give as required readings to her students.' Dubravka Zarkov, Institute of Social Studies 'Cleaver has brought together a compelling set of articles that depict men as at once misunderstood, maligned, and at times resistant, but truly necessary partners in the development process. The more one reads, the more it becomes clear that men represent a critical, but largely untapped resource that must be engaged in partnership to achieve gender equality, reduction in poverty, to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS, and to curb the many forms of gender-based violence.' James Lang, Oxfam, UK 'This book will make an extremely useful contribution to the growing debate on the politics and practice of including a focus on men and masculinities in gender and development policy and planning. With its rich, diverse and empirically grounded contributions, it should be widely read.' Andrea Cornwall, Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University
