Frankenstein Summary

Mary Shelley's classic work, published when she was just twenty years old, tells the tale of eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a terrifying creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Inspired after a competition between Shelley, her husband Percy, Lord Byron and John Polidori to see who could write the best horror story, Frankenstein is in part a gothic novel and considered by some as one of the first forays into science fiction. The story takes place in the 18th century and has led to numerous spin-off works featuring 'Frankenstein's monster.'

About

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein aged just eighteen. She was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin in Somers Town, London, in 1797. She was the second child of the feminist philosopher, educator, and writer Mary Wollstonecraft, and the first child of the philosopher, novelist, and journalist William Godwin.Aged sixteen, she fell in love with the writer Percy Shelley and after suffering from the death of their first child, she conceived again and gave birth to a son, William, in 1816. Her most famous work Frankenstein was originally published anonymously, and she continued to write up until her death in 1851. Frankenstein is famous the world over and remains one of the greatest gothic novels in literary history.
