The Dark Side of Europe Summary

The Dark Side of Europe: The Extreme Right Today by Geoffrey Harris

This book argues that Fascism can no longer be treated as an isolated historical or political phenomenon, relevant only to certain countries at certain times. It shows that old ideas are finding new audiences in current economic and social climates, and warns that the capacity of racist and fascist ideas to poison the political atmosphere in Europe should never be underestimated. Racism, the re-writing of history, the new Right, terrorism and secret service corruption are looked at comparatively. There is an analysis in English of the Le Pen phenomenon in France and extreme right terrorism in Italy, and the similarities of these with other European movements are brought out.

Table of Contents

Out of oblivion; the borders of right-wing extremism; the Le Pen phenomenon; terrorism; Europe looks at itself; 1992 and beyond.
