Models of the Visual System Summary

Models of the Visual System by George K. Hung

Some of the best vision scientists in the world in their respective fields have contributed to chapters in this book. They have expertise in a wide variety of fields, including bioengineering, basic and clinical visual science, medicine, neurophysiology, optometry, and psychology. Their combined efforts have resulted in a high quality book that covers modeling and quantitative analysis of optical, neurosensory, oculomotor, perceptual and clinical systems. It includes only those techniques and models that have such fundamentally strong physiological, control system, and perceptual bases that they will serve as foundations for models and analysis techniques in the future. The book is aimed first towards seniors and beginning graduate students in biomedical engineering, neurophysiology, optometry, and psychology, who will gain a broad understanding of quantitative analysis of the visual system. In addition, it has sufficient depth in each area to be useful as an updated reference and tutorial for graduate and post-doctoral students, as well as general vision scientists.

Models of the Visual System Reviews

From the reviews:
The clinical and academic vision science community will welcome this excellent publication which has integrated complex and topical issues from a wide range of research subjects pertaining to the quantitative analysis of the visual system. Eminent contributors each present comprehensive, relevant and well-written accounts of their respective areas of expertise. Of special note is that each Chapter presents an easily assimilable introduction to basic concepts and skillfully integrates these with interesting accounts of the development and utility of visual modeling. Consequently, the material presented will prove accessible and relevant to graduate, post-doctoral and established vision science researchers. The high level of scholarship and fine editing has produced an outstanding contribution to the vision science literature.
(Bernard Gilmartin, Aston University, Birmingham, UK)
This is an excellent book in which modern modeling techniques are applied to the investigation of the visual system. Its outstanding features are the depth of quantitative analysis and the breadth of coverage. The authors are world renowned vision scientists who have provided updated overviews of their fields. The book is well organized and provides authoritative answers to a number of important questions in the quantitative analysis of the visual system. It is ideally suited to bioengineers interested in the application of control theory in vision, and to vision scientists and clinicians interested in the systematic quantification of the visual system. I enthusiastically endorse this book.
(Fuchuan Sun, Shanghai Institute of Physiology, PR of China)
No other book has the breadth and historical perspective.
