Over My Dead Body Summary

Over My Dead Body by Hazel Mchaffie

Mother of two Elvira Kennedy is 35, and recently widowed. When she's fatally injured in a car accident her mother, Carole, is distraught and in no mood to listen to a stranger - claiming to be her new boyfriend - who appears at Elvira's bedside, insisting she wanted to donate her organs. But there's a darker reason behind her resistance to consenting: a secret she's kept hidden for three decades. Something which, if it emerged, could shatter all their lives. Pressure mounts. Time is running out. Carole finally bows to Elvira's wishes. Grateful letters from recipients whose lives Elvira has saved bring their own brand of comfort, but then a poem written by a young man threatens the safeguards preserving everyone's anonymity, with potentially devastating consequences. A moving story of love and loyalty which puts a human face on the subtle complexities of organ donation and transplantation, and the whole subject of medical ethics.

Over My Dead Body Reviews

... a fascinating read. This new book from Hazel McHaffie is written with a remarkable dose of sensitivity to human nature. The life stories are so real they could be genuine characters presenting the important ethical but also human questions that arise in transplantation ... a lot more thorough, authentic and enjoyable than any bioethical textbook on transplantation. SCOTTISH COUNCIL ON HUMAN BIOETHICS In a page-turner of a novel ... Hazel McHaffie maps out the moral maze surrounding organ donation with clear-headed compassion. Confronting and encapsulating the related issues, medical, ethical, social and emotional, she tells a story which is gripping in itself and valuable in its focus on a subject which, in the widest sense, affects us all. CORNFLOWER BOOKS Gripping and thoughtful. Hazel McHaffie writes about ethical issues in medicine with empathy and real emotional truth and power; revealing the impact of difficult decisions on the professionals, patients and relatives involved, and making you care about the characters. 'Over My Dead Body' is another page-turner, with surprising twists and family secrets making it hard to put down. Evocative and engaging, her novels deserve to be widely read. RACHEL WARREN (formerly sessional ethics tutor, King's College, London School of Medicine)
