IN THE SIXTIES Summary

IN THE SIXTIES by Edited by Ray Connolly

This anthology looks at the Sixties and the momentous events that shaped the decade. It contains contributions from journalists who were active during this era. There are great political moments: Patrick O'Donovan on Churchill's funeral, Arthur Hopcraft on Kennedy in Ireland and James Cameron on his funeral, Claire Hollingworth on Algeria, "Private Eye" on the Profumo affair and Maurice Richardson on the Moors murder trials. Nick Tomalin and David Leitch turn their attention to Vietnam, while P. G. Cerney focuses on the crushing of the 1968 uprising in Prague and Mary Kenny on the Paris riots of the same year. Alistair Cooke describes Martin Luther King's funeral. Culture is also featured: a "Daily Telegraph" article on "Swinging London" and a "Guardian" article on Mary Quant set the scene. Here too are Maureen Cleave on John Lennon, John Gale on Harold Pinter, "The Times" music critic on the Beatles' songs, and Auberon Waugh on "Private Eye" small ads. Hunter Davis, John Mortimer, Alan Coren, Max Hastings, Irma Kurtz, Penelope Gilliatt and others also provide contributions.
