Draw Shojo Girls and Bishie Boys Summary

Draw Shojo Girls and Bishie Boys by Inga Semisow

The Japanese word 'shojo' literally means 'girl', and 'bishie' means 'boy'. In the world of manga, they are fantasy creatures, full of love, friendship and adventure. They are, at the same time, romantic and playful, and include elves, fairies, mermaids and attractive young heroes. They have big, shining eyes, slender bodies, cool clothes, and fantastic hairstyles, jewellery and flowers. In this book, the author explains how to draw these fantastic figures with the help of numerous step-by-step drawings, and how to add colour, shading and detailing. At the end of the book is a gallery of inspiring drawings to fire your imagination and set you on the path to creating manga characters of your own.

Manga as an art form is growing quickly in popularity and appeals greatly to young artists. This book covers different aspects of figure drawing in the Japanese comic-book style. It takes two dominant manga themes ( the words shojo and bishie literally mean girl and boy) and covers how to draw them. Where we have seen in other books realistic manga figures this book shows us how to draw them in a more fantasy type style. Until reading this book I hadn't realised the importance of colour in these figures but Inga explains how the colours used are symbolisms for various qualities and how important it is to get that right.

From starting with a simple guide to faces and eyes she goes on to illustrate posture and body language, types of clothing and how to add colour, shading and details. Finishing touches such as clothing and jewellery are included, all with simple illustrations showing just how they can vary according to what is added. The fantasy section included elves, fairies and mermaids, and the gallery at the end shows more of these in greater detail so we can see some finished results.

This book is a must have for people wanting to learn Manga art and would make a perfect gift for a young adult artist.
